A Cable Tie (also known as a zip tie or tie-wrap) is a type of fastener used to bundle cables, wires, and other items together. It consists of a flexible notched strap with a “head” at one end that contains a locking ratchet.
How it works
When the pointed end of the strap is pulled through the head, the internal ratchet (or pawl) engages with the notches on the strap. This creates a one-way loop that can be pulled tighter but cannot be loosened without cutting the tie or releasing the mechanism manually.
Common Types & Materials
- Standard Nylon: Made from Nylon 6.6, these are the most common and cost-effective for indoor use.
- UV-Resistant: Usually black in color, these contain additives to prevent the plastic from becoming brittle when exposed to sunlight/outdoors.
- Stainless Steel: Used in extreme environments (like ships or engines) where high heat, chemicals, or heavy loads would destroy plastic.
- Releasable: Features a small tab on the head that allows you to undo the tie and reuse it.
- Identification (Marker) Ties: Includes a flat tab where you can write labels for specific wire circuits.
